National Park officials are pleased to announce a shuttle opportunity for visitors to access Cades Cove on Vehicle-Free Wednesdays beginning July 7 through September 1. The shuttle service will be provided by Rocky Top Tours from Townsend, TN to Cades Cove between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. each Wednesday. Shuttle service may be booked online at www.rockytoptours.com. Tickets for the roundtrip shuttle service, including transport of personal bikes, is provided for a flat rate of $25 per person. Participants who choose not to ride the shuttle are encouraged to plan their visit to Cades Cove in the late afternoons and early evenings to spread use out throughout the day.

Alum Cave has an incredibly rich history here in the Smoky Mountains. The Epsom Salts Manufacturing Company was established at Alum Cave back in 1838 where they mined Epsom salt from the cave. The mountain people used the Epsom salt found in the area to dye homespun clothing a reddish brown. During the Civil War the Confederate Army began mining saltpeter from the cave, which they used to manufacture gunpowder. In 2015, the Smoky Mountain National Park launched a two-year project to restore the Alum Cave Trail to all its former glory. The Trails Forever crew have focused restoration efforts on several targeted locations along the trail to improve visitor safety and stabilize eroding trail sections. Crews have been improving the overall trail safety by repairing historic cable and handrail systems, reinforcing hanging trail sections and improving drainage to prevent further erosion. The trail reopened on November 17, 2016.
The Appalachian Trail is one of the most well-known trails in the country. Known as the A.T. to those who forge the path, it runs for more than 71 miles through Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Hikers follow the Appalachian Trail with the assistance of a system of “blazes” painted on trees, posts and rocks. It usually takes 7 days for most people to hike the Smoky Mountain section of the A.T. You can shorten your trek by using Newfound Gap or Clingmans Dome as a mid-point, both of which can be tackled in 3 to 4 days. Remember, these routes are all one-way trips, you will have to make arrangements for transportation at the end of your hike.
